Issue: Is the issue that some of my classmates are driving me into depression and a constant state of irrationality present or my mind's creation?

Rule: When finals are approaching your fellow law student classmates will do whatever it takes to make you feel less of a person and make you question your humanity.

Application: My fellow law students have been very vocal about how much studying they've already done, how concise their outlines are, how their memos are finished and how they've already completed several practice exams. Some just make you feel inadequate in general in that they're quick to respond to any review question, small assignment, hypothetical, etc.

Conclusion: I don't like being around law students right now. It's not good for my health as they are a constant reminder of all the things I: 1) haven't done; 2) want to do; 3) want to find time to do; and 4) the reason why I don't study at the law library.

These people are driving me crazy and we have two weeks until our first final. I'm off to meditate as I don't do well with crazies surrounding me.

I'm totally with you...finals seems to be bringing out the crazy in everyone. I'm tired of being evaluated on the number of hours I put in or the length of my outline! Actually, what I REALLY wish is that my classmates would respect my "no talking about studying" rule...it's kind of a clone of the standard "no dissecting exams after the fact" rule and it's always been good to me. Turns out it's just not strong enough to fight the tide of panic that is a group of 1st year law students!

Good luck with finals prep ON YOUR TERMS! It's the best kind. You can only do what you can do and at the end of the day you can't expect more from yourself than you have to give. Who knows if this philosophy will work for me, but for now it's keeping my head on straight in a sea of crazy.

Yeah, I try to get out of the law school as quickly as possible these days. There are times when it's good that I have an hour commute!

I didn't think all this chit chat would bother me..and it does. Just walk away, that's what I do.

Don't listen to them! Run, shut your ears!

Listening to my fellow students was the big mistake I made. It sounds like you won't be sucked into this scheme of stress and anxiety, so good for you! :)

Lay low for the next couple of weeks and just focus on yourself. Let your fellow peers run themselves into the ground.

Get the hell out of the law school and stay as far away as possible- only go when you have to show up for an exam. 1st year students tend to be the worst about talking about how much they are studying and judging everyone else based on those conversations, but that kind of conversation even drives the 2 and 3Ls mad. As crazy as it sounds go to a coffee shop or even better, a wine bar, I'm always amazed at how productive I can be at those kinds of places!

Hang in there! It's almost over. :)

I read the same thing on blawgs before coming to law school, hence why I haven't really studied at the law school or hung around other law students all year.

    Cafes are the new libraries.

Or, try the public library, (or) the undergrad/business libraries. Anywhere but the law school. It's toxic.

It's not that bad here at Seattle U. Either we're more laid back or content with not being in the top 10%. Maybe it's a bit of both. There are a few students here like those you're talking about but they're so outnumbered that they don't really have any friends.

I feel your pain! The library is an agonizing place right now.

Wow! I guess I'm lucky, since my law student peers are pretty cool about not trying to be better than everyone else. Then again, I avoid talking about finals with everyone, so maybe I'm just living in blissful ignorance. :)

I used earplugs prior to the exams and tended to ignore all but close study buddies. This spring was my first semester and the panic was palpable so I hunkered down on the advice of the 2L and 3L's. So far, so good.

Hang tough this spring...almost at the end!
