Yes, I've been tagged once again and because I like to be a good sport I'll participate in it.
So, I'm supposed to tell you ten things that you don't know that are true. It's not as simple as you may think.
1) Yesterday was my dog's birthday. I forgot it but was reminded by a friend who texted me. I felt like crap.
2) I recently won a scholarship, however I was the only one who applied for it so I don't feel like I really won it.
3) I sleep on the right side of the bed.
4) I'm probably taller than you.
5) J's addiction to baseball drives me nuts sometimes.
6) I start working for a judge on Monday.
7) I miss reading books for pleasure.
8) My other dog and I recently got into an argument over whether eating garbage is a reasonable hobby to have.
9) I'm oddly addicted to watching "I'm A Celebrity! Get Me Out of Here!"
10) We have a very nice TV which never gets used. However, there is another crappy tv in front of the nice tv that we use everyday because the reception is better.
There! Done!
I think I'll pass on the tagging though.
Thanks to The Lovin Spoonful for the tag!

$80,000

So over at Feministe Jill asked what would you do if your law firm paid you $80,000 to not work for a year. The question's background can be found over at Law Ingenue for those of you who haven't heard of Skadden's offer to its associates.

So what would I do...

Well, several ideas come quickly to mind like:

  • getting and being pregnant in a low stress fashion,
  • traveling the world with only a backpack,
  • live in the country with a house full of dogs,
  • gather all my friends in far away places for one hell of a party,
  • MUSEUM HOP!
  • live in Tokyo in spring,
  • find the best coffee shops and read good books in them,
  • take cooking lessons in Thailand and India,
  • have one hell of a spa day,
  • do all of the above with J.

You?

A handful of Boing Boing pieces I found amusing during class last week:

Like most people I made New Years resolutions that I, again like most people, will forget about in approximately three weeks.

  • Use time more wisely.
  • Tone my midsection through actual exercise (Gasp!)
  • Visit a place I've never been to before.
  • Read 30 books not related to classes.
  • Exercise my patience for others and their opinions.
  • Cut down on spending and learn to dress more frugal.
  • Get out and meet more people!
  • Learn to be civil toward J's relatives.
  • Be a better friend.
  • Keep a cleaner house.
  • See my nephew at least once.
  • Have a lot of fun and try to surround myself with laughter as much as possible.

Now, these are pretty reasonable. So J thought I should add some predicitions in there. As I am not qualified to make predictions regarding the economy, Nobel Prize winners, or elections I think I'll stick to small stuff.

I predict:

  • at least one man will offer me beer on my morning bus ride;
  • my brother will be incarcerated for the entire year;
  • the Carolina Panthers will be in the Super Bowl;
  • the Mets will make the playoffs;
  • we will still have economic woes come July;
  • I will procrastinate on my outlines again;
  • that Heath Ledger will not win any posthumous awards for The Dark Knight;
  • and that Jennifer Aniston will not be married or pregnant;
  • but Nicole Kidman will be working on baby 2 along with Christina Aguilera and Katie Holmes.
  • and that Justice Stevens will resign late in the year.

Do you agree? Disagree? Care?

I'm stealing this from Useless Dicta!

"Look at the posts you’ve made in the past year, and paste the first line of the first post of each month."

January, February, March: Nothing! This blog was in utero? Perhaps I should say that I was too busy with law school applications and studying to re-take the LSAT.

April: The last couple of months have been hectic.

May: I've been busy lately which means that when I get together with friends there is a lot to catch up on, especially when you have to tell them you leaving the state for law school.

June: School is out which means I'm on to new odds and ends jobs this summer before I begin law school.

July: The following conversation occurred while shopping in a crowded Deseret Industries thrift store.

August: I picked J up from the airport and we went out for lunch where we ran into Mr. So-and-So.

September: Dear Classmates, Hi there.

October: I don't wear printed clothing or pieces that have their label embazzed on the front.

November: There is a month before finals...do you know where your outlines are?

December: And now I get to play catch up.

Thoughts: I think I come across as boring on this blog. This may be because I don't want to risk my anonymity but as I've been good about not letting this blog slip I just might introduce y'all more to me in the new year. And then you can really say that yes, Kel, you're lame.

I participated in this meme over at butterflyfish's place and so now the meme is here.

Leave a comment on this post, (any ole comment will do), and I will comment back the following:

a) Tell you why I [first read your blog]
b) Associate you with something -- a song, color, photo, etc.
c) Tell you something I like about you.
d) Tell you a memory I have of you [hint, it will probably be from a blog post].
e) Ask you something I've wanted to know about you.
f) Tell you my favorite userpic from your list [N/A]
g) In return, you need to post this on your own [blog].

So, comment if you want in, and I'll finish my responses by Sunday. So for those procrastinators out there like me you have awhile to comment!

By the way, I'd like to hear from any lurkers out there! I know you're out there!

As for butterflyfish's question: "What has been the biggest surprise so far?"

I would have to say the biggest surprise for me is the workload. I never feel caught up and I feel guilty when I'm not studying. You guys were serious about the amount of studying! My classmates' maturity level falls closely behind.

You know your life is crap when babies eat better than you.

I'm just waiting for Anthony Bourdain to admit that his daughter exited the womb with a cigarette dangling from her lips. How that man still has taste buds is beyond me.

What Five Things do you do to Stay Sane?

  1. Veg, as in not think, for at least an hour a day. After lectures and briefing my mind needs a break! My dogs usually assist with this daily task.
  2. Read a good book or magazine every once in awhile. I am still desperately trying to work this into my schedule...I usually end up feeling guilty though.
  3. Sleeping in until 8am, or just sleep in general.
  4. Cuddling up with a pot of tea and a blanket on a snowy or rainy dreary day. I love the peacefulness of snow. It has a wonderful calming effect on me.
  5. J's hugs. They are practically perfect in every possible way.

You? Come on! It's an easy gimme blog post!

Hat tip to Marginal Revolution

I promise you that it's lovely!

I took this from J.D. Maybe

  1. I don't wear printed clothing or pieces that have their label embazzed on the front.
  2. I don't drink cola and it's not due to any religious belief.
  3. I talk to my dogs as if they are people and pretend they talk back.
  4. I have had four ex-boyfriends who have had long hair.
  5. I don't like sandwiches of any kind.
  6. I sleep with a sleeping mask on.
  7. I don't like roller coasters but ride them anyway.
  8. I blog because I have a fear of writing and want to be a better writer.
  9. I have been famous for my facial expressions, oftentimes they get me into trouble.
  10. I have visited a number of countries but never another continent, they've only been islands.

If we could afford Guinness we would drink it all the time. After watching this commercial I'm having second thoughts as to why I should support Guinness as a company.

Objectification, sexism, racism and violence toward women are common themes in commercials however this commercial is completely unnecessary. It's revolting. It angers me and reminds me of how much more work needs to be done to educate the masses on how women are not objects.

I've lost a lot of respect for you Guinness. And to think I once referred to you as a classy beer.

I guess it's back to the redneck domestics for now.

My first thoughts were, "Oh, this must be a new fad in Hong Kong." But I was wrong since this service is apparently available in Maryland and Virginia. While I generally believe pedicures are overrated (most likely because I can't justify the cost when I can do it myself), I can't imagine myself having fish nibble my feet. Weird...

I have a wedding to go to soon. My boyfriend's best friend is getting married. My reaction to this wedding? Eh. Marriage is a topic you don't want to discuss with me. Especially if you believe there is nothing wrong with marrying someone after a month. I also hate weddings with a passion.

Now we are stuck having to get a gift even though we were nicely asked to refrain from giving gifts. WTF! Gift or no gift, either way we're screwed. Makes me wonder what Larry David would do?

So, I came across this on Boing Boing. I love Boing Boing! We are 95% positive we're getting it and 60% positive we should put it on the gift table to be opened in front of many. We're 100% positive she'll hate us even more than she already does. I should mention that this is the woman who leaves the table when the word porn is used in any way. Porn is one of my favorite words, so basically she and I have never talked. She also doesn't understand sarcasm...so we're totally screwed.

On the other hand we completely feel that testicle talc is a must for the modern groom. What man wouldn't use it for their honeymoon?

Yesterday I was having my brakes worked on, which meant I sat in the waiting room for an hour and a half. I came prepared with some reading so I was good. I did not realize that other people also come prepared to sit. In fact one guy brought his knife sharpening kit. Yeah. And sat there sharpening his knives. I'll admit I was a little freaked out, but the noise killed me! It sounded like nails on a chalkboard. Give me a break dude! I suppose I should just be glad they were knives and that he wasn't cleaning his gun, which I'm sure he could've gotten away with as well. Oh the joys of living in a red state!

Craigslist amazes me. A-MAZES ME! I posted some crap two hours ago and POOF! It's NOW GONE! I think tomorrow I'll post some more crap and see how long it takes for it to magically sell. The weird thing is I posted random crap. Like crap people don't normally use this time of year and yet it's gone! HOORAY! Less shit to move next month!

The following conversation occurred while shopping in a crowded Deseret Industries thrift store.

Kel's sister: Hey, you want a Magic Bullet?

Kel: Only if it's a vibrator.

Kel's ma: Yeah, like YOU need one.

Kel: What's that supposed to mean?

*Deseret Industries is a Mormon-run enterprise.

Facebook requests bother me. Especially the kind where I haven't seen or heard from the person since high school. I've recently had two acquaintances from high school request my friendship and I am confused as to what I should do.

When I graduated from high school I never looked back. I danced to the beat of my own drum and my small community knew it. I had no intention of marrying young and popping out babies like many of my friends did. And because of this I can honestly say I've kept in touch with one person from high school and he didn't even graduate with me.

What also interests me is that both of the individuals "requesting" were on my high school reunion committee, the one I was conveniently not invited to. I guess calling my father who still lives in the small-ass town and asking where I could be located was too much work. The snub made me want to totally Romy and Michelle the reunion. It just goes to show that reunions are for the popular crowd. My father urged I not attend anyway (the local newspaper announced it). He felt my accomplishments wouldn't match up with the many children the women I graduated with have had. Where I come from the badges are babies, Bibles, and husbands. No, no, and nope.

So I have not seen or talked to these people, nor would I via Facebook. Even in high school I really wasn't close to them. I'm not into "collecting" friends. In fact the only reason I signed up for Facebook was because my undergraduate students requested it and I felt it might boost my end of the semester evaluations (which it did). So what should I do? I know I'm not alone out there after recently reading this post over at Magic Cookie. Is Facebook something people are now using to reconnect and possibly become better friends? Isn't it just a way to lurk? Am I missing the point? Because I honestly feel like it's more of a "look how many friends I have" thing.

Ever watch St. Elmo's Fire? I went twenty-some years without seeing it and life was just fine. Now my appreciation for 80's movies will never be the same. Eh... Here, enjoy a clip! It talks about law students!

I did something today I have never, EVER done before, I complained to a hair dresser and succeeded with my request! Yeah! I had my haircut and colored almost two weeks ago and walked away extremely dissatisfied. I wanted my roots touched up since I had been long overdue for a coloring and cut. I walked away still with roots. She told me that the sun would lighten my hair. I wanted to tell her that I wasn't throwing money her way for that lovely advice. She complimented the way my hair gradually got lighter toward the ends. I wanted to kill her considering it was obvious that I was not a true, true blond with the way my hair turned out. Who goes to the salon wanting their roots one color and the mid and end sections another? Honestly? I'm not currently in a band* and I'd choose Kool-aid over a salon if I wanted to stand out.
So I called and made another appointment. She admitted that she was unhappy with the lifting process and now I am a much happier blond! My roots match my tips and I didn't hear a word about the sun naturally taking care of my strands. In the end I chose to tip her since she did the right thing by correcting her mistake. I also wanted to pay her for her time since I know what it's like to work in the service field. I appreciated not having to explain in fine detail my disgust and she was very professional. Hooray! I feel so much better!

*Superdrumtastic, my all-drum band, is currently on a hiatus.
